Entrepreneurship-led Economic Development

EDNZ 101 Core Subject

This course focuses on building understanding of new intellectual property (IP) business creation. After taking this course, participants will have a strong understanding of the role of intellectual property and the creation / exploitation of this to support new venture development. Participants will also have a stronger understanding of the entrepreneurial ecosystem, understand their role and the role of others, and come away with skills to support entrepreneur ecosystem development.

  • Overview of the types and stages of businesses and ecosystem support programmes

Economic Gardening

EDNZ 201 Elective Subject

Economic gardening is an entrepreneurial approach to economic development that seeks to grow the local economy from within. The course focuses on the premise that local entrepreneurs create the companies that bring new wealth and economic growth to a region in the form of jobs, increased revenues, and a vibrant local business sector.

Participants will understand how to develop an economic gardening programme which seeks to grow and nurture local businesses rather than hunting for “big game” outside the area.

  • Gain a greater understanding of your local entrepreneurial ecosystem

  • Understand the three key themes of Economic gardening and how to weave them together

  • Learn the seven steps to developing an implementation strategy for your economic gardening program to succeed.

Sustainable Economic Development

EDNZ 201 Elective Subject

Building a long-term sustainable economic development strategy is a complex undertaking. It requires strong and consistent leadership, bold vision, and the appropriate level of resources. But if done well, it can lay the foundation for a new and higher level of prosperity – prosperity based on growing balanced natural, social, and economic capital.

This course provides an overview of policy and practise in sustainable economic development. Participants will develop a stronger understanding of sustainable focused development activities and how these impact at global, regional, and local levels. Participants will also gain understanding of governance, innovation, investment, and development approaches to sustainable economic development strategies.  

Course Highlights

  • Gain an understanding of current sustainability policies and policy developments targeting the impact of climate change, energy, pollution, and societal externalities on the world.

  • Recognise the significance of different sustainable growth models and respective facets that address and impact economic development activity.

  • Understand how new technology and platforms are supporting the development of new eco systems supporting the transformative shift towards a low carbon-intensive and resource-efficient production and consumption activity.

  • Overview of ESG aspects of business and further links to sustainability initiatives and the transition to and benefits of triple bottom line reporting, linking responsible investing and financial performance

  • The importance of leadership (vision, mission, value) and purpose in designing sustainable businesses

  • How to engage effectively with stakeholders—rather than just shareholders—leading to better outcomes for all
